Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
