Working Life of Income Not Enough for UK Employees to Become Part of Richest 10%, Analysis Says

According to new analysis, the average earner in the UK would have to work half a century of income to reach the wealth level of the wealthiest 10% of the population.

Widening Wealth Gap Over Time

The analysis examined financial assets statistics including the Covid pandemic period and discovered that in 2006-08, it would have taken nearly four decades of median full-time earnings to enter the wealthiest decile of the wealth distribution.

A senior economist associated with the study commented: "Wealth gaps in Britain are currently so significant that a regular employee accumulating their complete salary across their entire working life would continue to be incapable to reach the top of the economic scale."

Assessing the Economic Gap

The research found that the gap between the wealth of the median citizen and a person belonging to the top 10% was one million pounds in 2006-08, but had widened to 1.3 million pounds in real terms by recent times.

The researcher further stated: "These gaps are doubly concerning as financial progression in Britain is low – those who commence life affluent tend to continue being rich, and vice versa."

Comparative Financial Divide

Although the economic divide expanding in actual numbers, the portion of complete net worth in the UK possessed by the wealthiest families – termed "comparative financial divide" – has been "broadly stable since the 1980s," per the analysis.

During this period, overall assets in the UK rose substantially from three times the annual GDP, to approximately 7.5x.

Contributors of Financial Divide

Referred to as "unearned" appreciation, by means of increasing property values and adjustments to superannuation evaluations, were the key contributors of the expanding economic divide since 2010, as stated in the study.

These appreciations generally flowed to senior citizens with real estate, the analysis reveals – exacerbating the generational financial disparity.

Age-Based Economic Gaps

The median economic difference between individuals aged 30-34 and those in their early 60s increased over twofold in real terms, from 135 thousand pounds in 2006-08, to 310 thousand pounds.

Area-Based Variations

There were also significant geographic differences, with the average level of net worth in recent years reaching £290k in the southeastern region, where real estate values have tended to rise rapidly, compared with £110k in the northeastern region.

COVID Era Effects

Amid the health crisis, when countless laborers were supported by the taxpayer-backed furlough scheme, and health crisis restrictions curtailed consumption options, the information reveals countless homes were capable of accumulating, increasing their wealth.

More affluent homes achieved superior outcomes, however. "The average household in the poorest fifth saw their liquid savings increase by just £80 during the COVID years (2019-20 to 2021-22), roughly identical to the pre-crisis period. Conversely, the typical family in the wealthiest fifth saw their available funds grow by 4,200 pounds," the study reveals.
