One Piece Ends a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured numerous filler arcs. Starting in January, after the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will take a quarterly hiatus until April, when the next major arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, the series will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei states this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, rhythm, and timing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month break that started in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The intermission was for the production team to enhance the visuals and allow the comic to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to deliver viewers with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the news, this may result in one episode of the anime covering a single manga chapter, with some instead handling more material or more to compensate for scheduling.

This concludes of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the traditional method of production, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally itself have so many side stories, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each annually, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
