The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
